YSO is leading a nomadic existence. Crowded out by rising rents or university schedules, it found a temporary home on Saturday in Bootham School Hall, tucking itself down one side of the auditorium, with the audience on the other or in the balcony. It took both groups time to adjust.

IT is unusual to have music by both Brahms and Schumann in the same string quartet programme, but the Vanbrugh – who are now into their third decade together – know all about breaking with convention. They opened with Mozart’s “Dissonance” quartet, K. 465 in C, which certainly does just that.

THE University of York’s visiting professor in jazz, pianist/composer John Taylor, and saxophonist Julian Arguelles, with his Octet in Residence, are world figures in jazz and they are attracting some outstanding young musicians to the York campus.
