MEET former football hooligan Gram Seed, who bears the scars of fights with fans all over England, but who began a new life after becoming a Christian.

Gram, 44, will be telling his remarkable story tomorrow afternoon outside St Michael-le-Belfry church, near York Minster.

He will be speaking at the culmination of Summer Soul, a seven-day programme of hospitality, practical help and prayer for the people of York which has involved 100 young Christians.

Gram, from Middlesbrough, said after being brought up in a broken home, he had joined a “firm” of fans supporting Middlesbrough, and travelled to grounds around the country for pre-arranged fights.

He was left with scarring on his face caused by a craft knife, and wounds elsewhere on his face and arm, as well as losing his front teeth. He was drinking and taking so much drugs that he eventually went into a coma, during which time a group of Christians had come and prayed for him.

He eventually became a Christian, since when he has not drunk or taken drugs, and had founded Gram’s Sowing Seeds ministry, whose patron is the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu.

Gram said he visits prisons and young offenders’ institutions, including Wetherby Young Offenders’ Institution and Wealstun prison near Wetherby, to try to help offenders turn their lives around as well.

Gram will be speaking on the church forecourt at 4pm tomorrow, when there will also be a free barbecue.

He will also speak later during the evening service inside the church.

I would say out of being a football hooligan, or heavily involved with the church, that being a hooliagn is the lesser of two evils.

I'm not knocking the guy at all, people like him can make a lot of difference. Well done!

Good for him! (Hope Gazza can do something similar.) He is saved and now a decent guy. Many people have tough old times and you can turn your life around..it does not matter how. Hope he can help others who are suffering and drifting.

Think I'd prefer a hooligan than an Evo. With a hooligan, at least you might be able to negotiate...

That’s right Adam I remember thinking this morning as I parked outside my brothers house just as the local church was finishing I wish all these polite people saying good morning were football hooligans kicking the cr@p out of my car and threatening my family.

Well this is obviously someone who is easily led... all we like sheep, have gone astray, to quote from Handel's Messiah.

Probably better to be following the benign but deluded Xtians than the destructive 'ooligans.

Erm - Sensationalism of Fulford may be quoting Handel, but Handel was in turn quoting Judeo-Christian Scripture (Isaiah). Is the irony intended?

Hilarious!
In no way do I agree.

Hieronymous, Handel's lyric just sprang to mind... I knew it was biblical, but couldn't have named the exact source.

Mumbo-jumbo set to good music is quite engaging and catchy. Most of the best composers were paid to sell "the message".

Neither Charles Jennens, who wrote the Messiah libretto, nor Isaiah, obviously, had much objective knowlege about the universe and the origins of life, and hadn't seen through the God myth.

Why anyone would believe that stuff now is a mystery to me. But if these old fables have given a hooligan something better to do, that's a good result.

Is it not odd that so many can live a perfectly decent and honest life without religious faith? It's all based on empathy with one's fellow humans... No need to invent deities!
