RACING fans may be able to travel to and from York Racecourse and the city centre on pedal-powered rickshaws after council bosses gave them the nod.
Licensing bosses have given the green light to an application for ten pedicabs to operate from two ranks in the city centre.
Several attempts have been made to bring pedicabs to the streets of York, but this latest application, from Hop On Rickshaws, is the first to find success.
The pedicabs will be licensed to use taxi ranks at Duncombe Place and Tower Street, and will be restricted to using the city centre before 11am and after 4pm in the same way as all other vehicles and cycles. Part of the services planned could include shuttle runs between the city centre and the racecourse on racedays.
Paul Hepworth, of the Cyclists’ Touring Club, said: “It looks as though they will be confined to working in the outer ring road.
“We are obviously pleased for them. They will provide a useful service and I look forward to being able to travel to and from the race course next year in 2009 in the new rickshaws.”
The approval came after strong recommendations from council licensing boss John Lacy, who said that the pedicabs would be an asset to the city and an additional attraction to the four million visitors the city attracts annually.
He was also attracted to the environmentally-friendly nature of the pedicabs Concerns had been voiced regarding the safety of cabs while on the city’s roads by North Yorkshire Police.

I hope these things are well insured, I can see alot of missing wing mirrors on the mount come race days. But I don't see the point of them, they are wider than normal bikes. so they wont fit in the cycle lanes, making them no quicker than a car, but more congestion because they are alot slower, and an obvious target for the louts to throw things at.
