YORK residents are being invited along to one of the biggest parties in the city later this month.

Rowntree Park will celebrate its 87th birthday with a party for all ages on Sunday, July 13, from 2pm to 5pm. The event is being organised by City of York Council’s parks and open spaces team and the Friends of Rowntree Park.

Younger visitors will be able to enjoy face painting and henna tattoos, as well as a model railway and cars, street sports, willow weaving, juggling and arts and crafts for all ages. There will also be a bouncy castle and giant sumo suits for the more adventurous and breakdancing, kick-about football in a cage and basketball sessions with the York Vikings Basketball Team for those who are feeling energetic.

Entertainments throughout the day include a falconry display, music from the Pantatsic Steel Band, Calabash African Drumming Ensemble and drumming and dance from the Transglobal Drummers.

Refreshments will be available and more than 40 community stalls will be offering their wares to visitors.

Stephen Whittaker, from the council’s parks and open spaces team, said: “Rowntree Park has been such an important part of the city’s leisure history and its great that we can celebrate its 87th birthday with a day packed with entertainments and activities. We hope that people will come along and join in the festivities.”

Parking will be available for Blue Badge holders only.

Why celebrate an 87th birthday? Why not wait for 90 or 100?
